Veteran Indian tennis players Sania Mirza and Rohan Bopanna, who enjoyed hot streaks on the professional circuit last week, withdrew from Adelaide’s second ATP and WTA events on Tuesday after first-round losses to their respective partners. Second-seeded Sania and Ukraine’s Nadiia Kichenok lost the first round of the WTA 250 event 3-6 3-6 to the Czech pair of Tereza Martincova and Marketa Vondrousova in 61 minutes. They had reached the semifinals last week.

In the men’s event, Bopanna and French teammate Edouard Roger-Vasselin lost their first round 4-6, 6-3, 3-10 in 69 minutes to Americans Steve Johnson and Austin Krajicek, who served extremely well and handled returns with intelligence.

Bopanna had won the men’s doubles with his compatriot Ramkumar Ramanathan.

Bopanna made too many mistakes in the Super Tie-Breaker, in which he fell behind 1-6 from where it was very difficult to come back.

Both Bopanna and Sania will now play in the first Grand Slam of the season, the Australian Open.
