India shuttle Saina Nehwal withdrew on Thursday from the ongoing India Open 2022 here at the KD Jadhav Indoor Hall in New Delhi. Malvika Bansod defeated Nehwal 21-17, 21-9 in the second round match that lasted 35 minutes. Nehwal, 31, was down 5-7 in the first game, and Malvika was in no mood to let this lead go and she ended up winning the first game 21-17.
Bansod didn’t look back and continued her momentum, winning the match in 35 minutes.
Earlier in the day, PV Sindhu advanced to the next round of the ongoing competition. In an all-Indian affair, Sindhu edged Ira Sharma 21-10, 21-10 to advance to the next round.
Sindhu was dominant in the first game and finished the game in 13 minutes. Picking up where she left off, the 26-year-old made the most of her momentum and ended up winning the match in 30 minutes.
Earlier, the Badminton World Federation (BWF) confirmed on Thursday that seven players have been withdrawn from the ongoing 2022 India Open after testing positive for COVID-19.

“The players returned a positive result in a mandatory RT-PCR test carried out on Tuesday. The doubles partners who considered close contact of the seven players were also withdrawn from the tournament,” the BWF said in a statement.
The seven players who tested positive for COVID-19 were all Indian and were: Kidambi Srikanth, Ashwini Ponnappa, Ritika Rahul Thakar, Treesa Jolly, Mithun Manjunath, Simran Aman Singhi and Khushi Gupta.
