PV Sindhu Enters Next Round Of India Open After Defeating Ira Sharma

Shuttler PV Sindhu advanced to the next round of the ongoing 2022 India Open at the KD Jadhav Indoor Hall in New Delhi on Thursday. In an all-Indian affair, Sindhu edged Ira Sharma 21-10, 21-10 to advance to the next round. Sindhu was dominant in the first game and finished the game in 13 minutes.

Picking up where she left off, the 26-year-old made the most of her momentum and ended up winning the match in 30 minutes.

Earlier, the Badminton World Federation (BWF) confirmed on Thursday that seven players have been withdrawn from the ongoing 2022 India Open after testing positive for COVID-19.

“The players returned a positive result in a mandatory RT-PCR test carried out on Tuesday. The doubles partners who considered close contact of the seven players were also withdrawn from the tournament,” the BWF said in a statement.

The seven players who tested positive for COVID-19 were all Indian and were: Kidambi Srikanth, Ashwini Ponnappa, Ritika Rahul Thakar, Treesa Jolly, Mithun Manjunath, Simran Aman Singhi and Khushi Gupta.

According to BWF, players will not be replaced in the main draw and their opponents will proceed to the next round.

“Test protocols have been implemented in accordance with Badminton World Federation and Indian Badminton Association guidelines to ensure the health and safety of all participants,” the statement further read.
