Team India was rocked by the wickets of Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane in the early hours of Day 3 as both batsmen failed to seize another chance to prove themselves after frequent failures in the test arena. Pujara was the first to go, falling on the second ball of the game on the third day to Marco Jansen. Keegan Petersen made an excellent diving catch to his right in the leg slide region to give the home team their first drive. Rahane followed Pujara back to the pavilion after adding just one run, as he outplayed Kagiso Rabada behind the wicket in the next over.

Rahane and Pujara showed glimpses of their glorious past with a strong partnership at the second Test, but were unable to produce the products in Cape Town. While Pujara made dd 43 in the early innings and held the crease during the crucial last hour of Day 2, Rahane has been a resounding failure once again.

This disappointed Indian cricket fans and they took to Twitter to react to Pujara and Rahane failing to contribute when the team needed it from them.

“Now Rahane has to make way for the youngsters. No Indian batsman in the past has had such a long career.”

“Double whammy for India in the first two overs. Rahane’s miserable run continues. This match could end very early unless there is a substantial partnership from here.”

“Rahane should have been written off in England itself. Unfair to vihari. Rahane hasn’t acted for over 5 years. His acting abroad between 2013 and 2016 has helped him.”

“Why is quitting both not feasible? Are Vihari and others no longer battle hardened? Can any newcomer do worse than what Pujara has done in the last four series? We saw our immense bench strength and now we say that removing both is not feasible. Totally regressive he thought.”

India’s hopes are pinned on the Virat Kohli-Rishabh Pant partnership.
