FIA confirm ‘detailed analysis’ of 2021 Abu Dhabi GP under way

Formula 1’s governing body, the FIA, has begun its “detailed analysis” of the events of the dramatic Abu Dhabi Grand Prix that decided the title and says “final decisions” on the results will be announced in March.

Max Verstappen claimed his first championship with a final lap overtake of title rival Lewis Hamilton, having changed tires under a late safety car, at the Yas Marina circuit.

Hamilton’s Mercedes team launched two protests against the race results, most of which were led by the seven-time world champion, but both were dismissed, while Mercedes opted not to lodge an appeal.

The FIA ​​later announced that “a detailed analysis and clarification exercise would be carried out for the future with all relevant parties”.

On Thursday, the FIA ​​said the process, under the leadership of new FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem, had started. The statement added: “The FIA ​​President has launched a consultation with all F1 teams on various issues, including this one.

“On January 19, an item on the agenda of the Sports Advisory Committee will be dedicated to the use of the Safety Car. The next stage will be a shared discussion with all the F1 drivers.

“The result of the detailed analysis will be presented to the F1 Commission in February and the final decisions will be announced at the World Motor Sport Council in Bahrain on March 18.

“FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem has asked the Secretary General for Sport and recently appointed Single Seater Director Peter Bayer for proposals to review and optimize the organization of the FIA ​​F1 structure for the 2022 season.”
