Although the game of cricket is considered to be a team sport, sometimes the performance of an individual player makes a difference between the two teams losing and winning. The biggest example of this was the Ashes series played in England recently, where Steve Smith single-handedly proved to be the major difference between the two teams and played a key role in keeping Australia ashes series. Steve Smith scored 774 runs throughout the Ashes.
If we look at the other side of the game of cricket, despite the individual player’s great performance at times, the team has to face defeat. If we talk about ODI cricket history, there have been many times when a player played a brilliant century, but despite this, the team had to face defeat.
Let’s look at the three players who have scored the most centuries in a team’s defeat in ODI cricket:
Zimbabwean wicket-keeper batsman Brendan Taylor made his ODI debut in 2004. In terms of statistics, Taylor is one of the best batsmen in Zimbabwe’s cricket history.
Taylor scored his first ODI century against Bangladesh in the year 2009. However, his century came in vain as Zimbabwe lost in that match.
Brendan Taylor scored 10 centuries in 193 matches in his international ODI career, out of which 8 centuries came in the team’s defeat. Due to the absence of other players of the team, many of their brilliant innings could not save the team from defeat.
The most recent 300 ODI matches for the West Indies cricket team and the highest run-scorer for the West Indies in ODIs are second in the list of the most centuries in the team’s defeat.
Chris Gayle took the responsibility of batting alone for the West Indies for a long time after the retirement of players like Lara and Chanderpaul. Gayle scored 25 centuries in 301 ODIs, of which 11 centuries came in the team’s defeat.
Former India batsman Sachin Tendulkar has set many records in his ODI cricket. Sachin became the first player to score a double century in ODIs.
Sachin scored 49 centuries in ODIs for India, although at times he struggled single-handedly against the opposition team and for this reason 14 out of his 49 centuries could not save the team from defeat.
