The Sri Lankan team, having been 1-0 behind in the three-Test series against the West Indies, has suffered two more major shocks. Experienced all-rounder Angelo Mathews has returned home due to personal reasons, leaving the tour in the middle. At the same time, Lahiru Gamge had to return due to injury.
Instead of both these players, batsman Danushka Gunnitalka and all-rounder Dasun Shanaka have got the place in the team. Danushka Gunnitalka played his last Test match against Bangladesh in February, while Dasuena Shanaka played his last Test match against India last year.
Although these two players will not be able to take part in the second Test match as they will leave Sri Lanka the same night. Because of this, these players will be able to take part in the third test match. However, the good thing for Sri Lanka is that they went on a tour of the West Indies with two additional players, so they have alternate players in the form of Dhananjay Desilva and Mahela Udavte. Apart from this, Kasuna Regitha and Asitha Fernando are also in the form of backups.
Significantly, in the first Test played at Queens Park Oval, Sri Lanka had to face defeat by a huge margin of 226 runs in the hands of the West Indies. Earlier, batting first, the West Indies scored a huge score of 414 runs. In reply Sri Lanka’s team was 185 in their first innings.
In the second innings, the Caribbean team declared their innings at 223/7 and set a target of 453 runs to win, in reply Sri Lanka‘s entire team could only score 226 and the match was lost. With this win, the West Indies made a 1-0 lead in the three-match Test series. The second Test of the series will be played in St. Lucia from June 14. See if Sri Lanka’s team can return or not.
