Hobart Hurricanes wicketkeeper Matt Wade lashed out at South African star Faf du Plessis during a fiery Big Bash game on Monday night.
Known for his competitive nature, Wade shouted ‘bowled’ before the ball hit the stumps in a move that angered the former Proteas test captain.
Perth Scorchers key recruit Du Plessis, 38, immediately turned to Wade and gestured with his hand at the University of Tasmania Stadium.
His dismissal for 32 off 16 balls was crucial, with the hosts winning a tight encounter by eight runs.
Former Australian wicketkeeper Wade offered an apology to Du Plessis – of sorts.
Wicketkeeper Matt Wade always gets under the skin of his competitors – and did so on Monday night in Launceston against South African star Faf du Plessis in the Big Bash
‘I think he was disappointed. I called ‘bowled’ maybe a little bit early,’ he told Channel 7.
I don’t know how early it was, but I think that’s why he was upset.
‘Apologies Faf,’ added Wade, laughing.
When the Hurricanes were at the crease earlier, Wade was in the lead with 51 off just 29 balls.
Rookie spinner Paddy Dooley also caught the attention of the hosts, taking 4-16 from his four overs.
Adelaide Strikers and Melbourne Renegades are the early competition pace-setters after both won their first two matches.
Before his dismissal, Du Plessis looked in fearsome touch, belting 32 off just 16 balls for the Scorchers
With the Hurricanes at the crease, Wade led the way with 51 from just 29 balls – and then tested Du Plesssis’ patience from behind the wicket.
The table-topping Strikers are in action on Tuesday night, hosting Sydney Thunder at Adelaide Oval.
After being rolled to just 15 by the same opposition at the Spotless Stadium on December 16, the Thunder will be keen to get revenge in the City of Churches.
It was the lowest score in T20 history, and Aussie test great Brett Lee didn’t mince his words on commentary.
I’m speechless, I really am. It’s terrible for Sydney Thunder,’ he told Fox Cricket.
‘Fifteen. It’s great bowling, but really? I’m speechless. The Strikers didn’t even warm up. I’ve never seen anything like it. I’ve never seen a game of cricket like it before.’
