The NBA fined Boston Celtics forward Grant Williams $20,000 after he spiked the ball into the crowd in a fit of rage during his team’s game against the Golden State Warriors on Saturday.
Joe Dumars, the NBA’s Head of Basketball Operations, issued the punishment on Monday.
The incident occurred while the Celtics were down 118-101 with 1:52 left in the game.

While the Warriors took a timeout, the Golden State guard shot a three pointer after the whistle blew.
The rebound went off the glass and into Williams, who spiked it in mid-air toward the fans in the crowd.
Officials saw the floor when the incident occurred, assessed Williams a technical foul, and ejected him for the rest of the game – which Golden State won 123-107.
Williams finished his night playing 31 minutes and hauling in four points, two rebounds, and one steal.

Williams was ejected from the game and that led to the fine handed down to him on Monday
While this was a dumb move on Williams’ part, it’s worth noting that he was a former straight-A student and was recruited by Harvard and Yale before choosing to go to the University of Tennessee.
Williams was ejected earlier this year for bumping into a referee during a heated contest against the Chicago Bulls.
Boston plays in Los Angeles against the Clippers on Monday night at 10:30 pm eastern.
